Adolescent Concerns Adolescence is a time of much transition. There are several issues that can arise during this time period in a young person’s life. It is a unique developmental period where most people struggle with behavioral, social, and emotional turmoil. Teens may experience school related problems, substance use, sexual experiences, acting out behaviors like stealing, decreased impulse control, self-harm, social anxiety, stress, family discord, etc. any or all of which can negatively impact their daily functioning. With the many changes that occur developmentally, there can be a need for increased support.
Questions to consider when evaluating whether to seek counseling for your adolescent: Does your adolescent suffer from any signs of depression or anxiety? (see pages) Is your teen attending school regularly? Has your adolescent started to withdraw from their friends or family? Has your teen lost interest in pleasurable activities? Is your adolescent struggling to complete simple tasks? Have there been major transitions or adjustments recently that might be significantly impacting your teen? (divorce, moving, new school, break up, grief, etc.) Are you worried about how much your teen is sleeping or eating?
